Gombe 2027 Governorship Election: The Battle for the Jewel of the Savannah

Gombe 2027 Governorship Election: The Battle for the Jewel of the Savannah

Gombe State is already becoming one of the political battlegrounds to watch ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. Gombe State may be one of Nigeria’s smaller states by population, but its 2027 governorship election is shaping up to be one of the more closely watched political contests in the Northeast.

The 2027 Gombe State governorship election is scheduled for February 6, 2027, and INEC has listed 17 candidates for the contest.

To understand the 2027 contest, it is necessary to look at how Gombe's political structure has evolved over the past two decades.

From PDP Stronghold to APC Territory

Gombe politics was dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party for much of the period before 2019.

In 2003, PDP candidate Danjuma Goje defeated the incumbent Abubakar Habu Hashidu of the ANPP, beginning a period of PDP control of the state. Goje also won the 2007 governorship election. The PDP's control continued under Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, who won the 2011 and 2015 elections.

The 2015 election was particularly important because it featured a familiar name: Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, who contested for the APC but lost to Dankwambo.

Dankwambo polled 285,369 votes, while Yahaya received 205,132 votes. Dankwambo won in 10 of Gombe's 11 local government areas, according to the election results reported at the time.

In 2019, Inuwa Yahaya returned to the governorship race this time with the APC ending the PDP's 16-year control of Gombe State guardian.ng   And for 2023 he secured the APC governorship ticket and went on to win re-election in March 2023.

That history matters because the APC enters 2027 as the incumbent party, while the opposition is hoping to turn the 2019 through 2023 gap into a comeback.

The race already features three major names: Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami of the PDP, Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna of the APC and Bala Bello Tinka of the ADC.

On OpinionMarket, the current market gives Pantami 45%, Gwamna 40%, Tinka 10%, while other candidates account for 5%.

Gwamna is carrying the ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His emergence was one of the biggest stories of the Gombe 2027 political season, on OpinionMarket.ng, the current market gives  Gwamna 40%, after emerging ahead of former communications minister Professor Isa Ali Pantami, who disagreed to the consensus this disagreement created one of the biggest questions in Gombe election.channelstv.com

With his loss Pantami pivoted to the People's Democratic Party (PDP).premiumtimesng In an interview with BBC Hausa, "Pantami said he had initially been hesitant after associates approached him about contesting, but his position gradually changed".

And then the third major name in the OpinionMarket market is Bala Bello Tinka, the ADC candidate ADC candidate Bala Bello Tinka  the big businessman and Politician who emerged as the ADC governorship candidate in Gombe in May 2026. His candidacy comes at a time when the ADC is attempting to position itself as a major alternative to Nigeria's traditional political parties.

In September, the campaign received another boost when political supporters continued mobilizing around Tinka's candidacy, on OpinionMarket.ng the candidate Tinka has 10%, while other candidates account for 5%.punchng.com

The Big Question: Who will win Gombe?

APC has something every opposition party wants: the advantage of incumbency and an existing political structure.

But the PDP has something equally important: a high-profile candidate in Pantami.

ADC, meanwhile, wants to turn dissatisfaction with the established parties into support for a third option.

That makes Gombe one of the races worth watching as the 2027 election approaches.

But what is driving the race?

To understand the 2027 contest, it is necessary to look at how Gombe's political structure has evolved over the past two decades.

The big question is With Pantami, Gwamna and Tinka competing for the political future of the state, Gombe is shaping up to be a race worth watching.

Will the APC retain the state? Will the PDP return to Government House? Or can the ADC pull off an upset?

You can follow and trade on the Gombe State governorship market on OpinionMarket as the race develops.
