Nigeria Is About to Put Its Creative Economy on the World Stage

Nigeria Is About to Put Its Creative Economy on the World Stage

Nigeria has never really had a problem with creativity as Lagos is getting ready for a major African Creative gathering. and CANEX 2026 is much more than music, fashion and entertainment.

We have the music, we have Nollywood,  we have fashion designers turning Ankara, Aso Oke and contemporary African styles into global looks. We have photographers, filmmakers, writers, dancers, chefs, digital creators and an entire generation making careers out of content. canex.africa

The bigger question has always been: how much money, investment and global business can Nigeria actually build around all that creativity?

That is where the Creative Africa Nexus Weekend 2026 (CANEX WKND) comes in.

For the first time, Nigeria will host CANEX Weekend in Lagos from November 5 to 8, 2026, bringing together creatives, investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs and industry leaders from Africa, the Caribbean and the diaspora. The event will be held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Cultural and Creative Arts.

And according to the Federal Government, more than 10,000 participants are expected, that is a lot of people coming to Lagos for creativity but the number is not even the most interesting part.

At first glance, CANEX sounds like another huge African entertainment gathering but it isn't yes there will be music, film, Fashion, literature, visual arts, gastronomy and sports but underneath all this is something bigger and that is MONEY.

The organisers want CANEX to connect African creative businesses with investors, financiers, distributors, technology companies and international markets.von.gov.ng

In other words, the conversation is shifting from “Look at what Africans can create to “How do we build businesses from what Africans create?” and this difference matter because the Nigerian government says it wants the country's creative industries to generate more trade, investment, exports and jobs, while improving access to financing, intellectual-property commercialization and international markets.

Think about how quickly Nigerian culture has travelled.

A song recorded in Lagos can become popular in London, Accra, Johannesburg, New York or Toronto. Afrobeat did it, A Nigerian film can appear on an international streaming platform thousands of kilometers away from Lagos. Nollywood is doing it and now fashion is next, A designer dressing a celebrity thousand of kilometers away from Lagos.

That is the power of the Nigerian creative economy the challenge is making sure that global attention translates into ownership, intellectual property, invest and sustainable businesses. Because getting millions of views is one thing and getting paid properly for those millions view is another.

Afreximbank says it has committed more than $2 billion to supporting creative and cultural industries across Africa and the diaspora between 2024 and 2027.

Its CANEX prots CANEX programme is designed to help creatives and businesses gain access to finance, skills and international markets.

The 2024 CANEX Weekend in Algeria also reportedly attracted thousands of participants and facilitated hundreds of millions of dollars in deals.

So when Lagos hosts the 2026 edition, the expectation is not simply to put Nigerian designers on a runway or Nigerian musicians on a stage.

Every Nigerian state will have something to show because it isn't just a Lagos only showcase. the federal government says all 36states and the federal capital are expected to have dedicated pavilions where they can showcase creative assets, cultural expressions and investment opportunities. Deal rooms will also be available for commercial discussions between investors and creative-sector operators.

That opens up an interesting question: What does each part of Nigeria actually have to sell to the world?

With the 10,000 people coming into Lagos, the Lagos State Government has said it is putting measures in place around transportation, health, emergency response and other logistics ahead of the event so traffic, hotels, security, transportation, healthcare and hospitality.

With all this happening, one thing is already made clear, Nigeria's creative economy is no longer something that can simply be dismissed as “entertainment.” It is becoming a conversation about business, exports, jobs, investment, intellectual property and global influence.

And if more than 10,000 people really do converge on Lagos for CANEX, there will be one question worth watching:

What comes out of Lagos after everyone goes home?

That might be the real story.

Headies 2026: Who Is Leading the Race? See the Predictions on OpinionMarket.ng

Headies 2026: Who Is Leading the Race? See the Predictions on OpinionMarket.ng

The countdown to the 18th Headies is on, and the competition is already generating plenty of conversation among Nigerian music fans.

The 18th Headies, themed “Africa to the World,” is set to take place on October 25, 2026, in Toronto, Canada. The official nominees have already been announced, with categories covering everything from Best Rap Single and Best R&B Single to Song of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. Headies

But beyond the nominations, another question is emerging: Who do people actually think will win?

That is where OpinionMarket comes in.

Check the Headies 2026 nominees

OpinionMarket currently has several Headies 2026 entertainment markets where users can trade on different possible winners.

The current market percentages give an interesting snapshot of where predictions are leaning.

Best Alternative Song

The Best Alternative Song market currently has Sweet Danger at 23%, followed by Lagos Lovin at 19%.

With additional outcomes available, the market is still open and could change as more users trade their predictions.

Best Rap Single

For Best Rap Single, 2:02 PM in London currently leads the market at 28%, while ACL - Blaqbonez follows at 22%.

The category could become even more competitive as Headies fans weigh the nominees against their own expectations.

Best R&B Single

The Best R&B Single market is also relatively close.

What You Need currently leads at 24%, while You4Me - Tiwa Savage sits at 21%.

That narrow gap suggests that there is no clear runaway favourite in the current market.

Songwriter of the Year

The Songwriter of the Year market is another close contest.

Adekunle Gold- Many people currently has 22%, just ahead of Fola - Who does that?, which stands at 21%.

With only a one-percentage-point difference between the top two outcomes, this market could easily shift.

Best Recording of the Year

For Best Recording of the Year, With You - Davido ft Omalay currently leads with 25%, followed by Arike - Kunmie at 23%.

The category recognises outstanding recorded music, including songwriting, production and rendition. Headies

Rookie of the Year

The Rookie of the Year market currently has Firstklaz at 27%, while Priesst follows at 20%.

The Headies describes the category as recognising an outstanding new artiste who achieved a breakthrough during the eligibility period.

Song of the Year

The Song of the Year market currently has With You - Davido ft Omalay at 25%, while Arike - Kunmie follows at 22%.

The official Headies describes Song of the Year as recognising the song that achieved the greatest cultural impact during the year under review. Headies

These percentages are market probabilities, not official Headies predictions or voting results.

They simply show where current OpinionMarket trading activity is leaning. As more people trade, the percentages can move.

That makes the markets particularly interesting as the awards get closer. A nominee leading today may not necessarily be leading tomorrow.

And for music fans, it adds another layer to the usual Headies debate:

Who do you think deserves to win?

The 18th Headies has several major categories, including Album of the Year, Best Male Artiste, Best Female Artiste, Digital Artiste of the Year, Afrobeats Album of the Year, Best Rap Album, Best Collaboration and Next Rated.

The ceremony is also taking the awards to Toronto, continuing The Headies' broader “Africa to the World” theme.

With the nominees already announced, attention will increasingly turn to who fans believe has the strongest chance of taking home the awards.

If you already have your favourites, why not see how your prediction compares with the market?
