Carter Efe vs Speed Darlington: Chaos in the Ring, Drama Before the Bell

Carter Efe vs Speed Darlington: Chaos in the Ring, Drama Before the Bell

Carter Efe and Speed Darlington are set to settle their latest war inside the boxing ring.

On October 1, 2026, Carter Efe will face Speed Darlington at The Balmoral, Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, as part of Chaos in the Ring. The event will take place on Nigeria’s Independence Day and will be broadcast on DAZN and SuperSport. Premium Times

And judging from what happened at the press conference, fans may not have to wait until fight night for the drama.

There is already plenty of history behind this matchup.

Speed Darlington previously faced Portable in a celebrity boxing bout in 2025 and lost after failing to continue into the second round. Speed later disputed the circumstances surrounding the defeat and attributed it to supernatural forces, a claim that was his own account and has not been established as fact. Channels TV

Then came Carter Efe.

In May 2026, Carter Efe defeated Portable by unanimous decision at Chaos in the Ring 4. All three judges reportedly scored the three-round contest 30 - 27 in Carter’s favour. He also received a 50 million Naira reward pledged by businessman Emeka “E-Money” Okonkwo. Premium Times

Now Speed Darlington is facing the man who defeated the fighter who previously defeated him.

That connection has naturally become part of the conversation surrounding the fight.

The talking did not remain online.

During the official press conference, Carter Efe and Speed Darlington got into a heated confrontation. According to reports, Carter stripped down to his boxers and charged across the table separating them, while Speed reached towards a stack of chairs before security stepped in. Punch report

Another report said the confrontation followed a heated exchange in which Speed referred to Carter as an “old man” and questioned whether he was still ready to fight. The Niche

The incident quickly became one of the biggest talking points ahead of the October 1 bout.

And the two were not the only fighters creating drama. Other face-offs on the Chaos in the Ring card also became heated, forcing security to intervene. Guardian

For Carter, this is a chance to build on his victory over Portable.

For Speed Darlington, it is another opportunity to change the narrative after his previous celebrity boxing defeat.

But this is also about entertainment.

Both men have built large audiences around their personalities, online content and controversies. That has made the build-up almost as interesting as the fight itself.

Even the organisers have acknowledged the entertainment value of the rivalry. Balmoral Promotions boss Dr Ezekiel Adamu explained that the promotion looks for celebrity matchups capable of attracting major attention while keeping professional boxing at the centre of the event. Pulse Sports

The debate has now moved beyond social media.

On OpinionMarket, traders are already taking positions on the Carter Efe vs Speed Darlington fight.

At the time of this article, the market shown on OpinionMarket has Carter Efe at 65.4% and Speed Darlington at 34.6%.

These figures represent the current market prices and can change as trading continues.

So while fans are arguing about the matchup online, OpinionMarket traders are putting their opinions into the market.

Trade the Carter Efe vs Speed Darlington market on OpinionMarket

The drama is already here: the Portable connection, the previous fights, the trash talk and the chaotic press conference.

Now the two entertainers have to settle it inside the ring.

Will Carter Efe build on his victory over Portable, or will Speed Darlington change the story with a win?

Nollywood Just Made History: 51,000 People, One Movie, One Record

Nollywood Just Made History: 51,000 People, One Movie, One Record

Nollywood just turned a movie premiere into a global spectacle. On Saturday, September 26, more than 51,000 people watched the crime thriller Black Market at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, giving Nollywood a new Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a single film screening Guinness World Records recognized 51,000 qualifying viewers, beating the previous record of 43,624, set in the Philippines in 2015.

But here is the interesting part: reports say the overall crowd was even larger, with Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat putting attendance at around 64,000 people. The Guinness figure only counted people who stayed from the beginning of the movie to the end.

And this wasn't exactly your regular cinema night. Gates opened from 2pm, with a red carpet, music, food and games before the movie began. The film itself follows five women caught up in a cross-border smuggling operation, with the story taking a darker turn after one of their daughters is kidnapped.

The film, directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, features actors including Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Susan Pwajok and Uzor Arukwe. The project involved Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios and FilmOne Studios, with FilmOne handling distribution.channelstv.com

So, what's next for Black Market?

Breaking the record has already created huge attention around the movie, but the bigger entertainment question is whether that excitement will translate into sustained public interest and commercial success.

Will Black Market continue dominating the entertainment conversation, or will another Nollywood story take over the spotlight?

That is where things get interesting on OpinionMarket. Check the entertainment markets, follow the buzz and make your call.

Lagos 2027 Election: The Battle for Lagos State

Lagos 2027 Election: The Battle for Lagos State

The 2027 Lagos governorship election is scheduled for February 6, 2027, and the race is beginning to look less like a distant political event and more like a battle over what direction Africa’s most populous city should take next. ngelections

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second and final term approaching its end, the political contest to take over Lagos is already producing alliances, controversies, legal questions and plenty of political drama.

The ruling party APC has its candidate, opposition parties are reorganising, and issues ranging from demolitions and housing to transport, urban planning and the conduct of previous elections are already becoming part of the conversation.

And Lagos being Lagos, the road to Alausa is unlikely to be quiet.

The APC has moved early.

Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor of Lagos, was adopted as the party's consensus governorship candidate by the Lagos APC's Governance Advisory Council in April 2026. President Bola Tinubu subsequently endorsed his candidacy. Channels TV

Hamzat's candidacy represents an attempt by the governing party to maintain continuity in Lagos after the Sanwo-Olu administration.

But the APC will still have to campaign around the issues that have generated criticism of the current government.

And this is where the OpinionMarket Lagos 2027 market becomes interesting.

As of September 25, 2026, the market shows: Obafemi Hamzat (APC)  - 35%, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (ADC) - 32%, Adedeji Doherty (PDP) - 29%, Other candidates - 4%

The figures are not an INEC result or an opinion poll. They are the current prices in OpinionMarket's prediction market, meaning they reflect how traders were pricing the listed outcomes at that particular point in time.

With the three major names sitting relatively close together in the snapshot, developments between now and election day could make the market particularly interesting to follow.

Then there is Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

The ADC candidate was one of the major opposition figures in the 2023 Lagos election and is returning for another attempt at Alausa.

But 2027 is not simply a repeat of 2023.

Rhodes-Vivour and Peter Obi previously contested the 2023 elections under the Labour Party. Obi has since left the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), meaning Rhodes-Vivour will be navigating the next Lagos election without the same political arrangement that existed in 2023. Channels TV

Rhodes-Vivour has said he is instead relying on a broader opposition coalition and grassroots organisation across Lagos. He has also made issues surrounding demolitions and protection of votes part of his political messaging. Channels TV

That raises one of the biggest questions of the 2027 race:

Can the opposition convert its growing political coalition into votes across Lagos?

Few issues have generated as much controversy around the Lagos government recently as the demolition of structures in Makoko and other waterfront communities.

The Lagos State Government has defended the exercise on safety and environmental grounds, particularly structures located around high-tension power lines and other high-risk areas. Governor Sanwo-olu said the government was acting to prevent potential disasters and announced that support, relocation options and grants would be considered for affected residents. Premium Times

But residents and civil society groups have strongly criticised the demolitions.

Protesters alleged that the exercise displaced families and destroyed livelihoods, while demanding compensation and an investigation into the conduct of the demolitions. Premium Times

The controversy has continued beyond Makoko, with the state government also ordering the removal of shanties along sections of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and taking enforcement action against buildings it considers unsafe or structurally compromised. Premium Times

The government describes these actions primarily in terms of safety, urban planning and environmental enforcement.

Critics, however, have raised questions about displacement, compensation and the effect of enforcement on poorer communities.

Those competing arguments could become important during the 2027 campaign.

The election is bigger than the candidates.

For many Lagos residents, the issues are much more immediate:

How expensive is it to live in Lagos?

How long does it take to move around the city?

Can people afford housing?

Are roads and public infrastructure keeping up with the population?

How should the government deal with informal settlements and unsafe buildings without leaving families stranded?

And what should Lagos look like after eight years of the Sanwo-Olu administration?

These questions give both the APC and opposition parties plenty to campaign on.

And as those issues develop, the OpinionMarket Lagos governorship market can also move.

For example, a major endorsement, new candidate, court development, controversy, campaign announcement or shift in public sentiment could change how traders price the different candidates.

That makes the market another interesting way to follow the political conversation alongside the news, campaigns and eventual election results.

The 2023 Lagos governorship election is also part of the story.

The election was won by Sanwo-Olu, while Rhodes-Vivour and PDP candidate Abdulazeez Adediran challenged the result through the courts. The legal challenges ultimately failed, with the Supreme Court upholding the result.

For 2027, questions around the conduct of elections and protection of votes are already appearing in opposition messaging.

Rhodes-Vivour has said the opposition coalition is being structured not only to mobilise voters but also to protect votes from intimidation and manipulation. That is his stated position, rather than an established finding about the 2027 election. Channels TV

For now, Hamzat, Rhodes Vivour and Doherty are among the names attracting attention in the OpinionMarket Lagos 2027 market.

But the election is still months away.

Political alliances can change. Candidates can gain or lose support. New controversies can emerge. And issues that seem secondary today could become central campaign topics tomorrow.

The election is already being debated, but the numbers will continue to change as the political story unfolds.

Benue 2027: Alia’s Second-Term Battle, Political Fallout and the Issues Shaping the Race

Benue 2027: Alia’s Second-Term Battle, Political Fallout and the Issues Shaping the Race

With the Benue State 2027 election fast approaching and the sitting Governor of Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia seeking another term, the opposition preparing for a comeback and serious disagreements within the ruling APC, Benue’s next governorship race is developing around security, public finances, political control, party divisions and the governor’s record in office.

The election is currently scheduled for February 6, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). INEC Nigeria

If the events of 2026 are anything to go by, Benue’s political season could get increasingly heated.

The biggest story surrounding the election is the political disagreement between Governor Hyacinth Alia and George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and a major political figure in Benue.

The relationship between the two was once central to the APC's 2023 victory in the state. But by 2026, reports described a growing rift between their camps, with disagreements over political control, party structures and the direction of the 2027 election. The Guardian

The dispute became particularly important around the APC governorship primary.

Governor Alia emerged as the APC candidate, but aspirant Jeffrey Kuraun rejected the result, alleging irregularities, manipulation and a denial of due process. Those are Kuraun's allegations, not established findings of fact. The Guardian

Alia subsequently said the disagreements within the party would be resolved and that the APC would overcome the post-primary crisis. The Cables

That leaves one major question hanging over the APC: can the party enter the general election as a united political machine?

The PDP is not approaching 2027 empty-handed.

The party selected Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, as its consensus governorship candidate after other aspirants stepped down and endorsed him. The consensus process was backed by influential PDP figures and groups in the state. The Cable

Aondoakaa has already positioned himself around issues including security, unity and governance.

But the PDP candidate has also found himself at the centre of political attacks. In August, Aondoakaa denied an allegation circulating that he had traded away his governorship ambition for 10 billion Naira, describing the claim as political fabrication. The Guardian

Again, the allegation should be treated as an allegation, not a proven transaction.

Benue's 2027 election is also being shaped by the continuing political argument over the finances of the state.

In June 2026, the Benue State government commission of inquiry reported that 139.8 billion Naira in public funds from 2015 to 2023 could not be accounted for, according to its findings. The inquiry was established by the Alia administration to examine the finances and assets of the previous administration of Samuel Ortom. The Cable

That has become another political fault line.

The findings concern the 2015-2023 period, largely covering Ortom's administration, rather than establishing wrongdoing by the current governor. They have nevertheless become part of the political conversation surrounding the state's past government and the opposition figures now seeking power.

The controversies are not confined to the previous administration.

In May 2026, the Benue State House of Assembly suspended the Auditor-General for Local Government over allegations involving approximately 4.6 billion Naira in financial misappropriation and fraud. The allegations followed a letter from Governor Alia concerning the official, and the matter was described as being under investigation. The Cable

There have also been political tensions between the governor and members of the state political establishment.

Former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, alleged that Alia pressured him to resign after he opposed a proposed relocation of the Tor Tiv palace. Dajoh's claim is disputed and should be understood as his allegation. The Cable

These episodes have contributed to the wider debate about political control and relations between the executive and other institutions in the state.

For ordinary voters, however, the biggest question may have little to do with party politics.

It is security.

Benue has continued to experience deadly attacks and displacement, making security one of the defining issues surrounding the Alia administration.

In July 2026, the killing of 15 people in Efeyi, Ugboju, in Otukpo Local Government Area triggered another political exchange between Governor Alia and PDP figures. The opposition accused the government of failing to provide adequate security, while Alia accused the opposition of politicising the crisis. Punch Newspaper

There is also a financial dimension to the security debate.

A review of Benue's first-quarter 2026 budget performance reported that the state spent 111.06 million Naira, or about 0.3%, of its 41.85 billion Naira security allocation during the first quarter. The figures have raised questions about security spending priorities amid continuing attacks. Premium Times

For voters living in affected communities, the question is therefore likely to be much simpler than the political arguments in Makurdi:

Has the government made them safer?

The 2027 contest also has to be viewed against the backdrop of the last governorship election.

In 2023, Alia, running on the APC platform, defeated PDP candidate Titus Uba with 473,933 votes to Uba's 223,913, according to the result cited by the Benue Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. The tribunal dismissed Uba's petition, while subsequent litigation continued through the courts. Channels Television

The political landscape has since changed.

The APC that dominated the 2023 election is now dealing with internal disagreements, while the PDP has reorganised around a new candidate.

That makes 2027 a very different contest from 2023.

Benue's 2027 governorship election is shaping up around a simple but complicated question:

Will voters reward continuity under Hyacinth Alia, or will the opposition convince them that the state needs a different direction?

The answer will ultimately come from Benue voters at the polls. For now, however, the political battles, allegations, security crisis and party divisions are already giving the election plenty of drama.

Beyond the political statements and campaign activities, there is another way to follow how the Benue 2027 race is developing: the prediction market.

At the time of writing, OpinionMarket’s Benue governorship market shows Governor Hyacinth Alia (APC) at 35%, Herman Iorwase Hembe (ADC) at 30%, Michael Aondoakaa (PDP) at 30%, while other candidates account for 5%.

The three leading names on the OpinionMarket market are Hyacinth Alia, Herman Iorwase Hembe and Michael Aondoakaa. Hembe is the ADC's governorship candidate, while Aondoakaa is the PDP candidate.

That makes the market particularly interesting because the political contest is not simply an incumbent-versus-opposition story. The ADC's Hembe is also being priced alongside the APC and PDP candidates, adding another dimension to the race.

As the election approaches, changes in party alliances, defections, campaign momentum, security developments and new political controversies could all affect how traders position themselves.

The market will continue to move as the political story develops.

BAUCHI 2027: Forget the Governors, Who Is Standing Behind Them?

BAUCHI 2027: Forget the Governors, Who Is Standing Behind Them?

The Bauchi 2027 Governorship election is scheduled for 6 February 2027, but the real contest has already started behind the scenes. Civic.ng

Governor Bala Mohammed is completing his second and final term in 2027, but his political influence remains central to the race to choose his successor. He has moved to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the party has backed Yakubu Adamu, a former Commissioner for Finance, as its governorship candidate. Punch.com

But the opposition is not short of familiar names.

The APC is fielding former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, while former senator Halliru Jika is contesting for the ADC. Senator Shehu Buba Umar, after leaving the APC, secured the PRP governorship ticket. Ibrahim Kashim, a former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government under Bala Mohammed, is running on the NDC platform. The PDP's candidate is Usman Adamu Sufi. Premium Times

One of the biggest storylines is happening inside the APC.

Senator Shehu Buba withdrew from the APC governorship primary, citing what he described as internal distortions and factionalization. He subsequently joined the PRP and became its governorship candidate. Other APC politicians also left following disputes surrounding the primaries. Premium Times

There has also been disagreement over the position of former Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar. While some people claiming to be his supporters announced support for Mohammed Abubakar, Tuggar's campaign organisation later rejected the claim and said it had not accepted the APC primary outcome. The Guardian.

That leaves a major question for the APC: can the party unit its different camps before election day?

The APM's strategy is built around continuity. Yakubu Adamu has presented himself as a candidate who would continue the policies of the Bala Mohammed administration. Punch Newspaper

But PDP candidate Usman Adamu Sufi has challenged the idea that an incumbent governor can simply determine his successor, pointing to Bauchi's political history and arguing that voters ultimately decide. The Guardian Nigeria

That makes the election more than a contest between parties. It is also a test of whether Bala Mohammed can successfully transfer his political influence to his preferred successor.

The Bauchi 2027 election is far from predictable. With party defections, internal disputes and several familiar political names in the race, the biggest question is still: who will emerge as Bala Mohammed’s successor?

The alliances may change, candidates may gain or lose momentum, and the political drama is only beginning.

OpinionMarket’s shows a closely contested race at the top. Yakubu Adamu is currently 48%, followed by Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar at 42%. Usman Adamu Sufi and the combined “Other Candidate” outcome are each at 5%. These percentage represent live market expectations rather than a conventional opinion poll, and may change as candidates build alliances, resolve party disputes and take their campaigns to voters.

Adamawa's 2027 governorship race is heating up as Binani returns, Fintiri switches parties and an ADC crisis adds fresh drama to the contest.

Adamawa's 2027 governorship race is heating up as Binani returns, Fintiri switches parties and an ADC crisis adds fresh drama to the contest.

Adamawa State may be months away from the 2027 governorship election, but the political drama has already started.

The race is attracting attention not just because of the candidates, but because of the party switches, internal disputes, and unfinished business from the 2023 election.

One of the biggest developments came in February 2026 when Governor Ahmadu Fintiri moved from the PDP to the APC, taking members of his cabinet and a significant part of the state's political structure with him. Fintiri said the move was aimed at aligning Adamawa with the Federal Government and advancing the state's interests. Channels TV

But the move immediately changed the political calculations surrounding who would succeed him.

Fintiri subsequently backed the APC structure around Ahmed Tijjani Galadima, who emerged as the party's governorship candidate after its primary. Adamawa State Government

Even that ticket has not escaped controversy. Reports circulated that the APC could replace Galadima, including speculation involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. The Adamawa APC publicly rejected the replacement reports and insisted Galadima remained its candidate. Punch news

Few names are as closely associated with Adamawa's recent electoral drama as Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani.

In 2023, Binani was the APC candidate against Fintiri. The election became controversial when the Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Ari, announced Binani as winner while collation was still ongoing. INEC headquarters later declared the announcement invalid, and Fintiri was eventually declared winner. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld Fintiri's election. Channels TV

Now Binani is back but under a different party.

After leaving the APC for the ADC, she joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May 2026 and is now the party's governorship candidate in Adamawa. Premium Times

She has since begun grassroots consultations across the state and selected Emmanuel Dominic Mapeo as her running mate. News hunters

The ADC race has also produced another twist.

Omar Suleiman, who emerged as the party's Adamawa governorship candidate, has publicly challenged reports that the party intended to replace him with Tukur Modibbo.

Suleiman says he remains the duly elected candidate and has taken the dispute to court. Reports have also surfaced of further allegations concerning possible changes to ADC documents, although those allegations have not been publicly substantiated.

That leaves Adamawa's 2027 contest with a fascinating mix of old rivalries, new alliances and unresolved party battles. Apex News Exclusive

That leaves Adamawa's 2027 contest with a fascinating mix of old rivalries, new alliances and unresolved party battles.

OpinionMarket is currently tracking the contest with: Omar Suleiman - ADC, Ahmed Tijjani Galadima - APC, Aisha Binani - NDC and Others. Among all these candidates Who Will Win The Adamawa State Election?

The market currently shows the three leading names sitting very close together, making the Adamawa contest one to watch as the political season develops.

The election is scheduled by INEC for February 6, 2027, while the political battle is already underway. INEC

CHINESE MUST GO! - CHINESE TRADERS VS NIGERIAN TRADERS

CHINESE MUST GO! - CHINESE TRADERS VS NIGERIAN TRADERS

Aspanda Protest: The argument at Lagos’ Trade Fair Complex is bigger than Chinese traders, It is about who gets to sell, who gets the customer and whether Nigerian retailers can survive in a market where their suppliers are increasingly becoming their competitors.

Something unusual happened at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex this week, busiest commercial hubs, Traders at the Aspanda area of Trade Fair Market in Lagos took to the streets on Monday, September 14, 2026, carrying placards and chanting “Chinese must go.” Videos of the protest quickly spread online, putting an old Nigerian business relationship under a new spotlight: the relationship between Nigerian importers and Chinese manufacturers and suppliers.
Prior to all that is heard there is an important distinction, the protesters have largely said their objection is not simply to Chinese nationals being in Nigeria or to Chinese products entering the country, their complaint is about what they describe as Chinese manufacturers and wholesalers moving directly into retail trading, selling to customers who Nigerian traders say they have spent years building relationships with and that is where the story becomes much bigger.guardian.ng

The Question still remains what exactly are the Traders Angry about? And the answer not so simple as the traders are not just complaining about the Chinese made producers but how many Nigerian businesses operates in Trade Fair is dependent heavily on goods sourced from China. Their complaint is about what they describe as a shift from wholesale to direct retail. Protesters complains that, some Chinese businesses that previously supplied Nigerian traders have increasingly started selling directly to consumers within the same commercial environment and this has put them in a fix.

Imagine importing a product from China, paying shipping costs, customs duties, transportation expenses, rent, staff salaries and other business costs only to discover that the company supplying the product is now selling directly beside you, this is what built the anger some traders alleged that Chinese businesses have established shops and warehouses within the complex and sell directly to customers at prices Nigerian retailers struggle to match. But this allegation remains claims by the protesters and have not been independently established.

The story gets more juicy introducing the Battle of the Middleman, the system of trading in Nigeria has been the same importers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers.
A product can move from a factory in Guangzhou to a Nigerian importer, from the importer to a wholesaler, then to a retailer before finally reaching the consumer, and with this chain every person has a margin but what happens when the one company can remove several stages of that chain "the product becomes cheaper" which is great news for the consumers but for the trader sitting in the middle of the chain, the matter gets painful and becomes a serious problem that needs to be solved.

This is why the Aspanda dispute is not simply about Nigeria vs China It is about who controls the supply chain and perhaps more importantly who controls the customer?

Another question that should be asked is it really about the Chinese people? this distinction matters because this dispute should not automatically become a debate about an entire nationality. The issue being raised by the traders is primarily about business activity, competition, market access and regulation.

The Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board has itself framed the issue around fair competition, market access and regulatory compliance. The Board has said that Nigeria can welcome legitimate foreign investment while also protecting the interests of Nigerian businesses and MSMEs. It has also urged traders to avoid taking the law into their own hands and said discussions with stakeholders are underway.

Nigeria needs foreign investment and Nigeria also needs Nigerian businesses this are two extremely important distinction. The difficult part is deciding how both can operate without one side believing the other is being given an unfair advantage.

Another questions on Nigerians should be asking is why we Nigerians import so much? If Nigerian factories could produce more of the products currently imported from China, local businesses would not have to fight over the same imported supply chain. the problem moves from Chinese retailers. t touches on manufacturing, electricity, logistics, foreign exchange, taxation, infrastructure, access to finance and the cost of doing business in Nigeria.

This is why the Aspanda protest has become an economic conversation rather than simply a market dispute. The protest may be happening in a Lagos market, but the underlying question is national: Can Nigerian businesses compete effectively in an economy where imported goods are often cheaper and foreign companies are becoming increasingly involved in local distribution and retail?

For now, the situation appears to have been brought under control, the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board has moved to engage stakeholders, But the underlying disagreement has not disappeared. But one thing is becoming increasingly clear: The Aspanda protest is not only about Chinese traders. It is about the future structure of Nigerian commerce.

Kaduna 2027: Uba Sani, Isa Ashiru and the Political Drama

Kaduna 2027 Governorship Election: Uba Sani, Isa Ashiru and the Political Drama

The Kaduna State governorship election race is already getting intense.

With the election scheduled for February 6, 2027, according to INEC’s published timetable, the major political parties have selected their candidates, campaign activities have begun, and old political alliances are being tested once again.

At the centre of the contest are incumbent Governor Uba Sani of the APC, Isa Ashiru of the ADC and Shehu Usman Bawa of the PDP, alongside other candidates.

On OpinionMarket Kaduna governorship market shown in the attached market image displayed: Uba Sani (APC)  - 48%, Isa Ashiru (ADC) - 45%, Bawa Shehu Usman (PDP) - 5%, Other candidates - 2%.

But Kaduna's 2027 election is about more than the names on the ballot.

It is also about the political fallout between former allies, opposition realignment, regional interests, religion, security, education and whether the political structure of a party can actually translate into votes.

And if the events of the last few weeks are anything to go by, Kaduna could have plenty more drama before voters head to the polls.

Now you need to understand why the 2027 race is attracting attention, it is important to look back at the last governorship election.

In 2023, APC's Uba Sani was declared winner with 730,002 votes, while PDP's Isa Ashiru finished with 719,196 votes a difference of just 10,806 votes.

The PDP won 13 local government areas, while APC won 10.

Ashiru rejected the result and challenged the election in court. The case eventually reached the Supreme Court, which affirmed Sani's victory in January 2024. Channels Tv

The 2023 result is the reason Ashiru cannot be dismissed. He lost by only 10,806 votes, but his route back to the governorship is now more complicated.. But this time, he is not contesting under the PDP.

He is now the ADC governorship candidate.

Governor Uba Sani secured the APC governorship ticket without a contested primary, receiving 459,393 affirmation votes at the party's May 2026 primary.

His campaign enters the election with the advantage of incumbency and an APC structure that has expanded through political defections.

But Sani has also made a significant change to his 2027 ticket.

He selected Jerry Adams, the Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service, as his running mate.

The decision is notable because APC had previously fielded Muslim-Muslim governorship tickets in Kaduna in 2019 and 2023. Adams is a Christian from Southern Kaduna. Channels Tv

That means religious and regional representation is likely to remain part of the political conversation as campaigns continue.

For Isa Ashiru, this is another attempt at the Kaduna governorship.

He contested the 2019 and 2023 elections under the PDP and finished second in both contests. In 2023, he came within 10,806 votes of defeating Uba Sani. Channels Tv

But the political landscape around Ashiru has changed considerably.

He is now representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the wider opposition realignment ahead of 2027.

Ashiru won the ADC governorship primary in May with 86,113 votes. Channels Tv

He later selected former Kaduna State House of Assembly member Irmiya Kantitok as his running mate. Premium Times

The bigger question is whether the ADC can convert its growing political network into votes across Kaduna's three senatorial zones.

One of the biggest stories surrounding Kaduna politics is the changing relationship between Nasir El-Rufai and Uba Sani.

Sani succeeded El-Rufai as governor in 2023 after previously serving as senator for Kaduna Central.

Today, however, they are on opposing political sides.

El-Rufai has moved to the ADC, while Ashiru has become the party's governorship candidate.

That creates an unusual political situation: Ashiru, who previously contested against El-Rufai for governor, is now operating within the same political camp as the former governor.

Premium Times has described this realignment as one of the major factors reshaping the 2027 Kaduna contest. Premium Times

For political observers, one question is particularly interesting:

Can old political networks be transferred from one candidate or party to another?

That may become one of the biggest stories of the election.

The PDP has selected former House of Representatives member Shehu Usman Bawa as its governorship candidate.

The challenge for the PDP is that the political battle is no longer simply a repeat of APC versus PDP.

Ashiru's movement to the ADC has changed the opposition landscape, meaning opposition voters and political figures are now spread across different platforms.

That makes the question of opposition consolidation particularly important.

Kaduna's 2027 race has also produced an unusual nomination dispute involving the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Former Senator Danjuma La'ah and lawyer Mohammed Sani Abbas have been linked to competing claims over the party's governorship ticket.

In August, the NDC's Kaduna State chairman said the party had not officially settled on either candidate, saying the issue remained unresolved at both the state and national levels. Channels TV

This is one of those political stories that could become even more important if the dispute affects the party's final candidate or campaign structure.

The latest drama came almost immediately after the governorship campaign period opened.

On September 9, ADC supporters held a solidarity walk for Isa Ashiru in Kaduna.

The event later resulted in a confrontation involving security operatives.

The ADC alleged that security agencies were used to disrupt the gathering, while the Kaduna Police Command said its intervention followed concerns about public order and alleged obstruction of a major road.

The police said it did not intend to stop any lawful political gathering. Premium Times

The competing accounts have added another layer of tension to an already closely watched election.

And the story did not end there.

On September 16, Premium Times reported another confrontation involving APC and ADC supporters, with allegations involving damaged vehicles, party offices, banners and campaign materials. Premium Times

These incidents are important not because they determine who will win, but because they show how quickly political competition can become heated once campaigns officially begin.

Security is another issue that voters and political observers will be watching closely.

Kaduna has experienced years of insecurity, particularly in rural communities.

The issue has already become part of the political conversation, with opposition politicians criticising the government's handling of security while the administration points to its own efforts.

The election could therefore become partly a referendum on how voters assess the government's record on security, alongside issues such as infrastructure, education, jobs and the cost of living.

Education has also entered the campaign conversation.

In August, Governor Uba Sani and ADC candidate Isa Ashiru traded accusations over the dispute involving Kaduna State University (KASU) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

ASUU-KASU had threatened industrial action over welfare and institutional issues, while reports said more than 200 professors and other academic staff had left the university. Premium Times

For voters, issues like this could matter beyond party politics.

The question becomes:

What issues will actually influence voters when the campaign moves from rallies to polling units?

The 2023 numbers provide an interesting reference point.

Uba Sani won with 730,002 votes. Ashiru had 719,196. The difference was only 10,806 votes.

But the geographical distribution of those votes was also significant. PDP won 13 LGAs while APC won 10. Punch News

That means Kaduna's three senatorial zones, local political networks and turnout could all become important factors in 2027.

A candidate does not necessarily need to dominate every part of the state.

The electoral arithmetic can come down to where each party is able to build enough support and turnout.

This is where the Kaduna election becomes particularly interesting for prediction-market watchers.

And perhaps the biggest question:

Will Kaduna's 2027 election be another narrow contest, or will one political camp manage to pull clearly ahead before February?
