Can Alex Otti Hold on to Power as Opposition Parties Prepare for Another Battle in Abia State?

Can Alex Otti Hold on to Power as Opposition Parties Prepare for Another Battle in Abia State?

Abia State’s 2027 governorship election is shaping up to be an important test of the state’s political loyalties. After years of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) control, Alex Otti of the Labour Party broke that pattern in 2023. Now, as the next election approaches, the question is whether the political forces that brought him to power will remain strong, and how the opposition plans to challenge him.

The election is scheduled for February 6, 2027, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published its final list of governorship candidates. INEC

For much of the period leading up to 2023, the PDP was a dominant force in Abia politics. Okezie Ikpeazu won the governorship election in 2015 and secured another term in 2019.

But Alex Otti had been challenging that political establishment for years.

In 2015, Otti contested under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Although Ikpeazu was initially declared the winner, the Court of Appeal later ruled in Otti’s favour. The Supreme Court subsequently reversed that decision and upheld Ikpeazu’s election.

In 2019, Ikpeazu won re-election with 261,127 votes, compared with 99,574 for APC candidate Uche Ogah and 64,366 for Otti, who again contested under APGA. The Cable

The story changed in 2023. Running under the Labour Party, Otti received 175,467 votes, defeating PDP candidate Okey Ahiwe, who scored 88,529. Otti also won in 10 of the state’s 17 local government areas. Channels Tv

His victory ended the PDP’s hold on the governorship and demonstrated that the state’s political landscape could change significantly between elections.

The Supreme Court upheld Otti’s election in January 2024, bringing the major legal challenge to his victory to an end. The Cable

INEC’s final list contains 15 governorship candidates. Some of the key names to watch in the OpinionMarket market include:

Alex Otti - Labour Party (LP)

The incumbent governor is seeking another term after his historic 2023 victory. His record in office, delivery on campaign promises, public perception of his administration and ability to retain political support will be central issues during the campaign.

Eric Chinemuechueya Opah - All Progressives Congress (APC)

Opah is the APC’s candidate. The party will be looking to translate its political organisation and national presence into support in Abia. Its campaign will need to connect its message to the concerns of voters across the state.

Anosike Kelechi - Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

The PDP returns to the contest after losing the governorship in 2023. Given its previous electoral victories in 2015 and 2019, its organisation, alliances and ability to reconnect with voters will be important parts of the race.

Doris Ogala - African Action Congress (AAC)

Nollywood actress Doris Ogala is entering the 2027 Abia governorship race as the AAC candidate. She has publicly criticised Governor Alex Otti’s administration and spoken about her plans for the state, including job creation, education, healthcare and infrastructure. Her candidacy adds another voice to the contest and gives voters an additional option to consider. Vanguard

Other candidates include Kalu Kalu Agu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and candidates from several other parties. INEC

What Could Shape the 2027 Contest?

Otti’s record in office

Incumbency gives Otti the advantage of being able to campaign on his administration’s record. However, it also means voters can assess his promises against their experiences. Infrastructure, public services, employment, security and economic opportunities are issues that could feature prominently in public debate.

The opposition’s ability to organise

The PDP’s previous victories show that it has a history in Abia politics, while the APC and other parties will also be competing for support. Whether opposition parties can build effective campaigns, maintain unity within their ranks and reach voters across the state will be worth watching.

The political impact of 2023

Otti’s victory showed that established party loyalties do not necessarily determine the outcome of an election. The 2027 contest will test whether the political shift that occurred in 2023 can be sustained or whether voters will favour a different direction.

Voter concerns and turnout

Campaigns, party structures and endorsements matter, but so do the everyday concerns of voters. The economy, the cost of living, infrastructure and trust in political leadership could influence how people assess the candidates. Turnout and the distribution of votes across the state’s 17 local government areas will also matter.

These are factors to monitor, not guarantees of any particular result.

The market currently displays Alex Otti (LP) 40.1%, Eric Opah (APC) 35.0%, Kelechi Anosike (PDP) 15.0% and Other Candidate 10% as its listed outcomes. Its displayed percentages represent market estimates at the time of the screenshot, not official polling figures or confirmed probabilities of the election result.

As the campaign develops, party announcements, public debates, candidate activities, alliances and verified election updates will provide more information about the contest.

Abia’s political history has already shown that electoral outcomes can change. The next election will offer another opportunity for voters to assess the candidates and decide the direction they want the state to take.
