David vs Goliath No More: Malawi’s fairytale ends as Cameroon Clinches WAFCON 2026.

The Cameroon-Malawi WAFCON final was a historic and dominant victory for Cameroon, who won their first continental title with a 3-0 win

Here’s a detailed look back at the game

For 90minutes, history was waiting to made.

Cameroon and Malawi walked into WAFCON final knowing that neither nation had ever lifted the trophy before. For Cameroon it was a fourth attempt at conquering the final after three previous heartbreaks. For Malawi it was an extraordinary first appearance on the biggest stage, capping a fairytale run that exceeded expectations. But when the two sides met the dream was only meant for one team.

What followed was final that turned Malawi’s remarkable journey to a heartbreak while giving Cameroon the continental crown they have chased for years.

Tactical Breakdown: Experience vs. Momentum

Cameroon's Defensive Blueprint

Cameroon's game plan was ruthlessly effective: neutralise the Chawinga sisters and control the midfield. They locked down the flanks and cut off service to Malawi's attacking threats. Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina (just 22 years old) was instrumental, sweeping up danger behind the backline and later earning the Golden Glove award.

Malawi's Struggles

Malawi's attacking fluidity evaporated. The Scorchers resorted to long balls instead of controlled passing, often surrendering possession immediately. The absence of suspended midfielder Rose Kadzere (Montpellier), who had scored twice en route to the final, was keenly felt
